Cristian Segurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01272467045773307314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526165052314979161.post-60319081107047281312023-07-22T11:12:00.000+02:002023-07-22T11:12:13.236+02:00This Vermont God
The service did my heart and I hope my soul some good. It had been long since I heard such an approach. It is our practice now, at least in the large cities, to find from our psychiatric priesthood that our sins aren't really sins at all but accidents that are set in motion by forces beyond our control. There was no
such nonsense in this church. The minister, a man of iron with
tool-steel eyes and a delivery like a pneumatic drill, opened up with
prayer and reassured us that we were a pretty sorry lot. And he was
right. We didn’t amount to much to start with, and due to our own tawdry
efforts we had been slipping ever since. Then, having softened us up,
he went into a glorious sermon, a fire-and-brimstone sermon. Having
proved that we, or perhaps only I, were no damn good, he painted with
cool certainty what was likely to happen to us if we didn’t make some
basic reorganizations for which he didn’t hold out much hope. He spoke
of hell as an expert, not the mush-mush hell of these soft days, but a
well-stoked, white-hot hell served by technicians of the first order.
This reverend brought it to a point where we could understand it, a good
hard coal fire, plenty of draft, and a squad of open-hearth devils who
put their hearts into their work, and their work was me. I began to feel
good all over. For some years now God has been a pal to us, practicing
togetherness, and that causes the same emptiness a father does playing
softball with his son. But this Vermont God cared enough about me to go
to a lot of trouble kicking the hell out of me. He put my sins in a new
perspective. Whereas they had been small and mean and nasty and best
forgotten, this minister gave them some size and bloom and dignity. I
hadn’t been thinking very well of myself for some years, but if my sins
had this dimension there was some pride left. I wasn’t a naughty child
but a first rate sinner, and I was going to catch it.

I felt so revived in spirit that I put five dollars in the plate, and
afterward, in front of the church, shook hands warmly with the minster
and as many of the congregation as I could. It gave me a lovely sense of
evil-doing that lasted clear through till Tuesday. I even considered
beating Charley to give him some satisfaction too, because Charley is
only a little less sinful than I am. All across the country I went to
church on Sundays, a different denomination every week, but nowhere did I
find the quality of that Vermont preacher. He forced a religion
designed to last, not predigested obsolescence.

John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley in search of America.

Cristian Segurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01272467045773307314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526165052314979161.post-81573307824765378722023-03-12T12:51:00.005+01:002023-03-12T12:55:58.993+01:00The 2022 Best Iceberg movies

Vasili Grossman, Vida y destino.

Cristian Segurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01272467045773307314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526165052314979161.post-60471894784886195192023-02-04T10:26:00.003+01:002023-02-04T10:31:17.135+01:00The 2022 Best Iceberg Songs

Golden Iceberg: Sudno, Molchat Doma.

Silver Iceberg: Acid Rain, Lorn.

Bronze Iceberg: April, Tik.

Cristian Segurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01272467045773307314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526165052314979161.post-42153631925264416652022-10-02T23:14:00.003+02:002022-10-02T23:14:21.800+02:00Every day is a lullaby

Y no he podido olvidar su historia:

Cristian Segurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01272467045773307314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526165052314979161.post-49570057180519052742022-05-03T11:11:00.002+02:002022-05-03T11:15:40.198+02:00Aprender a volar

Qué débil me encuentro todavía. Y yo me alargo, me alargo hacia aquello. He intentado verlo. He empezado a mirar más arriba.

He empezado a aprender a volar.

Giant clusters of galaxies, in which groups of
hundreds or thousands of galaxies flow lazily around each other in long
intertwined paths, begin to find that those paths are growing longer.
The wide spaces traversed by the galaxies over millions or billions of
years widen even more, causing the galaxies at the fringes to slowly
drift away into the growing cosmic voids. Soon, even the densest galaxy
clusters find themselves inexorably dissipated, their component galaxies
no longer feeling any central pull.

From a vantage point within our own
galaxy, the loss of the clusters should be the first ominous sign that
the Big Rip is in progress. But the speed of light delays this clue
until we are already feeling the effects much closer to home. As our
local cluster, Virgo, begins to dissipate, its previously languid motion
away from the Milky Way begins to pick up speed. This effect is subtle,
though. The next one is not.

We already have astronomical all-sky
surveys that are capable of measuring the positions and motions of
billions of stars within our own galaxy. As the Big Rip approaches, we
start to notice that the stars on the edges of the galaxy are not coming
around in their expected orbits, but instead drifting away like guests
at a party at the end of the evening. Soon after, our night sky begins
to darken, as the great Milky Way swath across the sky fades. The galaxy
is evaporating.

From this point, the destruction picks up
its pace. We begin to find that the orbits of the planets are not what
they should be, but are instead slowly spiraling outward. Just months
before the end, after we’ve lost the outer planets to the great and
growing blackness, the Earth drifts away from the Sun, and the Moon from
the Earth. We too enter the darkness, alone.

The calm of this new solitude doesn’t last.

At this point, any structure still intact
is straining under the push of the expanding space within it. The
Earth’s atmosphere thins, from the top. Tectonic motions within the
Earth respond chaotically to the shifting gravitational forces. With
only hours to go, the Earth cannot hold together: our planet explodes.

Even the destruction of Earth could, in
principle, be survivable, if, having interpreted the signs, you have
already retreated to some compact space-based capsule. But that reprieve is short-lived. Before long, the
electromagnetic forces that hold together your atoms and molecules
cannot withstand the ever-expanding space within all matter. In the last
tiny fraction of a second, molecules crack open, and any thinking
beings still holding on are destroyed, torn atom-from-atom from within.

Beyond that point, there is no possibility
of watching the destruction, but it carries on nonetheless. Nuclei
themselves, the ultradense matter in the centers of atoms, are the next
to go. The impossibly dense cores of black holes are eviscerated. And at
the final instant, the fabric of space itself is ripped apart.

Katie Mack, The end of everything (astrophysically speaking).

Cristian Segurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01272467045773307314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526165052314979161.post-9040851021146390182022-01-07T14:52:00.001+01:002022-01-07T14:52:13.452+01:00Los mejores libros del Iceberg 2021

Golden Iceberg: Spillover, David Quammen.

Cristian Segurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01272467045773307314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526165052314979161.post-66656970159341822312021-12-07T19:31:00.005+01:002021-12-07T19:33:50.606+01:00A sleepwalker

1969: I had better tell you where I am, and why.
I am sitting in a high-ceilinged room in the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in
Honolulu watching the long translucent curtains billow in the trade wind
and trying to put my life back together. My husband is here, and our
daughter, age three. She is blonde and barefoot, a child of paradise in a
frangipani lei, and she does not understand why she cannot go to the
beach. She cannot go to the beach because there has been an earthquake
in the Aleutians, 7.5 on the Richter scale, and a tidal wave is
expected. In two or three minutes the wave, if there is one, will hit
Midway Island, and we are awaiting word from Midway. My husband watches
the television screen. I watch the curtains, and imagine the swell of
the water.

The bulletin, when it comes, is a distinct anticlimax: Midway reports
no unusual wave action. My husband switches off the television set and
stares out the window. I avoid his eyes, and brush the baby’s hair. In
the absence of a natural disaster we are left again to our own uneasy
devices. We are here on this island in the middle of the Pacific in lieu
of filing for divorce.

I tell you this not as aimless revelation but
because I want you to know, as you read me, precisely who I am and where
I am and what is on my mind. I want you to understand exactly what you
are getting: you are getting a woman who for some time now has felt
radically separated from most of the ideas that seem to interest people.
You are getting a woman who somewhere along the line misplaced whatever
slight faith she ever had in the social contract, in the meliorative
principle, in the whole grand pattern of human endeavor. Quite often
during the past several years I have felt myself a sleepwalker, moving
through the world unconscious of the moment’s high issues, oblivious to
its data, alert only to the stuff of bad dreams, the children burning in
the locked car in the supermarket parking lot, the bike boys stripping
down stolen cars on the captive cripple’s ranch, the freeway sniper who
feels “real bad” about picking off the family of five, the hustlers, the
insane, the cunning Okie faces that turn up in military investigations,
the sullen lurkers in doorways, the lost children, all the ignorant
armies jostling in the night. Acquaintances read The New York Times, and
try to tell me the news of the world. I listen to call-in shows.

Joan Didion, The White Album.

Cristian Segurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01272467045773307314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526165052314979161.post-68806388746331775812021-09-18T10:04:00.000+02:002021-09-18T10:04:04.345+02:00¿Quieres gusanitos?

"Mamá, no llores, ¿quieres gusanitos?".

Silvia Hidalgo, Yo, mentira.

Cristian Segurahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01272467045773307314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4526165052314979161.post-2073535145874853352021-09-02T08:44:00.001+02:002021-09-02T08:44:58.796+02:00Siempre es emocionante

voy al super. Si no, no hay compra, ¿no? He vivido prácticamente solo toda mi
Me gusta, me mola ir
No

Jordi Canal, 25 julio 1992.
