A wife for the emperor

"In the last resort the choice had to be made by the "emperor". The way that this had been done in the time of Tung Chih and Kuang Hsu was for the girls who were candidates to stand in a line and the future bridgeroom to select one of them. I have heard two versions of how he indicated his choice. One was that he handed a jade symbol to the girl who took his fancy; the other was that he hung a pouch on the girl's buckle. When it came to my time the princes felt that lining up a row of maidens would no longer be suitable and decided that I should choose from photopraphs instead. I was to pencil a mark on the picture of one I liked best.

Four photos were sent to the Mind Nurture Palace. To me the girls seemed much the same and their bodies looked as shapeless as tubes in their dresses. Their faces were very small in the pictures so that I could not see whether they were beauties or not. The only comparison I could make was between the styles of their clothes. It did not occur to me at the time that this was one of the great events of my life, and I had no standards to guide me. I casually drew a circle on a pretty picture.

She was the daughter of Tuan Kunf of the Manchu Order clan. She was called Wen Hsin (her other name was Hui Sin) and she was three years younger than me, so that she would have been twelve when I saw her picture. As she was the girl favoured by the high consort Ching Yi her rival Tuan Kang was most displeased and, overruling Ching Yi's protests, she insisted on summoning the princes to persuade me to choose her candidate. She said that Wen Hsiu came of an impoverished family and was ugly, whereas the girl she supported, Wan Jung, was of a rich family, wondering why they had not explained things at the beginning, instead of letting me think that there was nothing to this business of making a pencil mark and drew a circle on the photo of Wan Jung.

This met with the disapproval of the high High Consorts Ching Yi and Jung Hui. After a series of arguments among the High Consorts and princes the high consort Jung Hui came out with this suggestion: "As His Majesty has marked Wen Hsiu's picture it wouldn't do for her to be married to one of his subjects, so he had better take her as a consort." I did not feel that I had much need for one wife, let alone two, and was not at all keen on this proposal; but when the princes and the high officials pointed out to me that according to the customs of my ancestors "the emperor has to have an empress and a consort" this was an argument I could not resist."

Life of a Manhattan lobster

"Two weeks ago, Abe Moscowitz dropped dead of a heart attack and was reincarnated as a lobster. Trapped off the coast of Maine, he was shipped to Manhattan and dumped into a tank at a posh Upper East Side seafood restaurant. In the tank there were several other lobsters, one of whom recognized him. “Abe, is that you?” the creature asked, his antennae perking up.
“Who’s that? Who’s talking to me?” Moscowitz said, still dazed by the mystical slam-bang postmortem that had transmogrified him into a crustacean.
“It’s me, Moe Silverman,” the other lobster said.
“O.M.G.!” Moscowitz piped, recognizing the voice of an old gin-rummy colleague. “What’s going on?”
“We’re reborn,” Moe explained. “As a couple of two-pounders.”
“Lobsters? This is how I wind up after leading a just life? In a tank on Third Avenue?”
“The Lord works in strange ways,” Moe Silverman explained. “Take Phil Pinchuck. The man keeled over with an aneurysm, he’s now a hamster. All day, running at the stupid wheel. For years he was a Yale professor. My point is he’s gotten to like the wheel. He pedals and pedals, running nowhere, but he smiles.”
Moscowitz did not like his new condition at all. Why should a decent citizen like himself, a dentist, a mensch who deserved to relive life as a soaring eagle or ensconced in the lap of some sexy socialite getting his fur stroked, come back ignominiously as an entrée on a menu? It was his cruel fate to be delicious, to turn up as Today’s Special, along with a baked potato and dessert. This led to a discussion by the two lobsters of the mysteries of existence, of religion, and how capricious the universe was, when someone like Sol Drazin, a schlemiel they knew from the catering business, came back after a fatal stroke as a stud horse impregnating cute little thoroughbred fillies for high fees. Feeling sorry for himself and angry, Moscowitz swam about, unable to buy into Silverman’s Buddha-like resignation over the prospect of being served thermidor.
At that moment, who walked into the restaurant and sits down at a nearby table but Bernie Madoff. If Moscowitz had been bitter and agitated before, now he gasped as his tail started churning the water like an Evinrude."

"[...] No em dónes, doncs, la pau, car me la vull guanyar.
El cor em creix i em creix, com el pa a l'alcavor,
mentre vaig, vinc i torne. No em dónes, doncs, la pau
ni la serenitat: són un luxe, només,
i no estem per a luxes. Vull anar i tornar

Dóna'm lluita, car no vull posar-me a adorar

silenciosament, quasi sense plorar.
Europa em dol i em dol ben concreta i calenta,
com un pa que es fa agre de no portar-lo al forn."

Barcelona ja no és bona

Drinking ruinously on board

"Drinking commences in every grenadined corner of the Gabriella and it is very particular style of boozing. It can only be described as "sober drinking" -that serious business of getting perfectly shit-faced that seems to be an approach peculiar to the people of the Russo-Baltic countries east of Sweden. Manny Finnish men and women seem to pride themselves on being able to drink ruinously. Drams accompany everything from waking up until passing out. A glory shot of vodka with breakfast followed by lunchtime liveners and schnapps between each course at dinner are commonplace, even on land.
[...]

Passengers board Gabriella to buy alcohol -the merriment is essentially just a distraction while the shop is closed. The swedish government takes 140 kronor (12€) in tax a bottle of vodka -only Iceland and Norway demand more- this is comparatively high when you consider the UK takes half that amount.
[...]

By the team the buffet gets going at 19:00 everyone is stagering around -even the children, who are just being children, look drunk. Many take scant notice of the smörgasbord, opting instead to bleed the free DIY bat that consists of three pumps dispensing red and white wine and lager. It is an odd sensation to sit and observe and whether these people are truly enjoying themselves."

Angelo Ferracuti, Nafta.

p.d from Nafta: "After you're the champion, first you lose your legs, then you lose your reflexes, and then you lose your friends." (Willie Pep)

(Italiano-English translation by myself:

"Corrado Capanna was taking a look to his illustrated book and was also reading odd anecdotes that not even he knew. Under a picture of Jake La Motta, that picture of his combat with Tiberio Mitri, there was a quote of him saying: "My family was so poor that every Christmas my father went outside our home and made a shot to the air with his gun. Then, he would come back nervous and tell us, to the kids, that Santa Claus had just committed suicide.")
